The activities at the Foundation in 1996-97 included research, documentation, urban design guidelines and area development.
Pols, the traditional living quarters of Ahmedabad, are faced with conflicts largely stemming from the external forces of urbanization and commercialization of the city core. Vastu-Shilpa Foundation took the initiative in documenting the living environmental of the Jethabhaini Pol at Khadia to understand the emerging issues and to evolve strategy for its sustenance and future developments. Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority – (MMRDA) has accepted the basic development plan and the urban design guidelines for the purposed International finance and Business Centre at Bandra Kurla Complex, Bombay. MMRDA has set up an Urban Design cell at their premise specially for further development of urban spaces and has retained the Foundation to advise on the same. Through the MMRDA Urban Design Cell detail development designs have been evolved for the collective urban space typologies, namely Plazas on road junctions; pedestrian pathways; maidan; water fronts and walkways along roads. Similar studies and development were initiated by the Foundation for a 1700 acres site owned by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) at Pirana in Ahmedabad as International Finance and Trade Centre. AMC has welcomed the proposal and entrusted the feasibility studies work to Vastu-Shilpa Foundation. Design development for the sustainable community housing at Surendranagar for the economically weaker section took place this year. This phase had followed the socio-economic and and physical surveys of Ismaili community, undertaken by the Foundation about four years ago. Retrospective exhibition of Shri Doshi’s work was held at Balgandharva Art Gallery in Pune as well as Birla Academy in Calcutta. The research on “Builtform and Development Controls – A case study of Ahmedabad” won the Journal of Indian Institute of Architects Award for Excellence in Architecture for the year 1996. Vastu-Shilpa Foundation Fellowship for Research was awarded to Ms. Shirley Balani for the study of Employment Structure of the City of Ahmedabad – A Spatial Analysis and Mr. H.V. Srinivas for the study on Architectural Grammar for Solar Passive Design in Tropics – Performance Studies and Simulation of Traditional Houses in Northern Karnataka. The Vision of Life lecture this year was delivered by Shri Hasumukhbhai Shah, Chairman, Gujarat Ecology Commission. While over twelve Tuesday Talks were arranged covering the range of subjects. Louis I Kahn Rolling Trophy for Documentation was participated in by over 32 schools of architecture at the annual convention of NASA ’97 held at New Delhi. Vastu-Shilpa Foundation Awards of Excellence instituted four years ago and Publication support for selected student thesis at CEPT, Ahmedabad have become a lasting feature at CEPT and are offered every to the outstanding students in various design schools. |
