  OUR  PHILOSOPHY : The institute has a philosophy of taking up challenging task of development of technical education and keeping it up by preparing seasoned graduates in highly sophisticated field of engineering and technology. Development of India as an emerging industrial power is a demanding exercise as it involves the combination of cost effectiveness and efficiency alongwith producing world class technology at the cutting edge. For about four decades we have been doing it with style and splendour, at Govt. Engineering College Raipur.
 

    
GENESIS
: After independence and with reorganisation of the state of Madhya Pradesh, the government attention was directed towards giving priority to overall development of technical education. Till as late as 1956 there were only three technical institute in the country offering courses in the important fields of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering. In view of this fact and also with an aim of exploiting the ample mineral resources of the region, this institute was set-up on 1st May 1956 as Government College of Mining and Metallurgy.
    
The Foundation stone of the college building was laid by the first president of independent India honourable Dr. Rajendra Prasad on 14th September 1956. The construction work was completed in 1962 and inauguration was on 14th March 1963 by India's first prime minister Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru . The first session of the college commenced from 1st July 1956 with the admission of 15 students each in Mining and Metallurgy Engineering. In 1958-59 with the commencement of additional courses in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering the college came to be known as Government College of Engineering and Technology. Later graduate courses in Chemical Engineering (1965), Architecture (1984) and Electronics (1985) were also started. After being conferred the autonomy in 1997 the college now is named as Engineering College, Raipur. At present the institute offers graduate level courses in nine disciplines. Architecture, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering & Information technology.
      
In addition, post graduate courses offered are :
1. M. Tech in applied Geology (3 years)
2. Master of Computer Applications (3 years)
3. M.E. in Water Resource Development and Irrigation Engineering (3 semester)
4. M.E. in Energy System and Pollution. (3 semester)
5. M. E. in Chemical Process Design (3 semesters)
.
6. M.Tech. in Computer Engineering (3 semesters).
   
As vigilant sentinels the college management and staff are doing their best, qualitatively and quantitatively to keep in step with the rapidly changing technical requirements of nation.

LOCATION
: Raipur, the city of Madhya Pradesh, has been the place of strategic importance in being the gateway to the mineral rich Chhattisgarh region, having an enormous potential for development with seemingly inexhaustible natural resources.
    
The city of Raipur is situated on the trunk line connecting Bombay and Howrah at a distance 831 Km from Howrah and 311 Km from Nagpur and on the national highway #6, about 297 km from Nagpur. The location of this institute is in the vicinity of Bhilai steel plant.
     
  ABOUT THE NEW STATE : The Chhattisgarh state has ample resources of coal, iron ore and other minerals. Mineral rich districts have given it a unique advantage of being in touch with current industrial scenario.
  
Raipur, the capital of the Chhattisgarh state has given the institute an ideal location for world class breeding gnomes mantes and innovation of technology. The region in which institute lies has coal and mineral mines, and it has many cement industries in the vicinity.
    
CAMPUS : As you move along the National Highway # 6 (from Raipur to Bhilai) the largest campus which comes to notice and building which strikes your imagination immediately will be that of Govt. Engineering College, Raipur, spread over an area of 100 acres, it is one of the biggest campus amongst all the technical institutions of Madhya Pradesh. The campus is a completely planned entity consisting of the main college building, six hostel blocks, residential quarters for teaching and non-teaching staff, a bank, a separate PWD and electricity office for campus maintenance, a well equipped dispensary and a well maintained guest house. The campus has got an additional facility of a local railway station meant specially for the benefit of the students of nearby areas. This campus is away from hubbubs of the city yet it is easily accessible from it. The college is about 5 km from the Raipur railway station and about 12 km from the air port.

BUILDING : The college has a well - organised, magnificent building symbolising the grandeur of the college. This huge building alone covers a total area of 62060 sq.m. It is a triple storied planned structure alongwith a central tower standing upto the height 23 metres. There are 35 lecture halls extending over an area of 6675 sq.m & 13 drawing halls/studios extending over an area of 3510 sq.m. about 85 labs over an area of 11510 sq.m. The other amenities comprise of a canteen,, cycle stand, N.C.C, N.S.S department, a student activity centre co-operative store, and dispensary. The building is being further extended for the architecture and electronics departments with the construction cost of about Rs. 40 Lakh.
         
LIBRARY : The GEC library constitutes a huge central library which supports the teaching research and extension programmes of the institute. All students faculty Members and employees of the institute are entitled to make use of the library facilities.
       
The library is situated on the 2nd floor of the building and covers a total carpet area of 1640 sq.m.. It has more than one lac books available for students of various disciplines. It also has a good reference section. The library subscribes to 126 journals which provide updated information on latest technological developments. There is a separate reading section subscribing to several newspapers and magazines. The library is managed by a very competent staff of 14 members. Department of Architecture has a separate library.
          
CANTEEN : There is one canteen for the students located on the ground floor of the main institute building . Working of the canteen is looked after by college employees union.

HOSTEL FACILITY : The GEC has 5 boys hostels and a girls hostel. Each hostel is self contained with amenities such as reading room, an indoor games room and dining hall with mess. All the hostel rooms are adequately furnished. Each hostel has a capacity to house about 100 inmate students. Administrative head of each hostel, the warden, is a senior faculty member. Each hostel has different working committees. Each committee is responsible for specific aspects of hostel affairs.

SPORTS FACILITY : The institute lays considerable emphasis on student participation in various outdoors and indoor games. The students are encouraged to participate in sports activities which covers athletics, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, table tennis, volley ball and chess. Well laidout field are available in the campus ¾ a cricket field, a football ground, volleyball and basketball courts, table tennis tables, playground for hockey, one badminton and tennis court covering a total area of 80,000 sq.m. provide ample opportunities to the students to explore their Olympian spirit. Each hostel has a sports committee and is represented on the board for sports activities. Inter-hostel & inter branch competition and tournament are arranged in all games and sports activities. Many talented students have gone to represent at state and national levels and cased fame for the college.
                  
BEYOND ACADEMICS : Other than regular courses offered, the institute tries to develop the personality of student through various activities through various students clubs.
        
CLUB ACTIVITIES : The campus bustle's with the activity of club's like JESID & ROTARACT which are actively involved in organising various activities like G.K.contest, Debate competition, Fashion show's. Musical show's etc.

TRAINING & PLACEMENT OFFICE : There is a separate department, which primarily looks after the industrial training of the pre-final and final year students and placement of the final year students in reputed industries. Apart from the above responsibilities the TPO has also been involved with recruitment of lecturers under part time and contractual basis, co-ordination of various extra curricular activities of the students and staff, furnishing the required details about the college to various agencies, preparation of various project reports for various funding agencies in consultation with the department concerned. In short the TPO acts as a training & placement agency, as a liaisoning agency, as a co-ordination agency and also as public relation agency for the college. Hence the importance of the TPO can not be over emphasised. Some of the prestigious industries regularly visiting the campus are Policy Management Systems India Private Limited, Larsen and Toubro Ltd., Indian Petrochemicals Corporation Ltd., , CMC Limited, Grasim Industries, Information Management Resources Bangalore, Bosch Power Tools Ltd., DCM Limited, Jayaswal's NECO Ltd., JP Rewa Cement, GNFC Ltd., SRF Ltd., Century Cement, Maihar Cement, Oswal's Chemicals & Fertilisers Ltd., Simplex Castings and Bharti Telenet.
          
PUBLICATIONS : Books, research paper's and articles of faculty of the institute are published in various technical journals, students shows their technical acumen in "Technoexpress" and creative ability and talent in the students' magazine "Shilpi".
        
SPORTS : Institute has a separate sports department which looks after the sports activities at the college ,inter college levels. The college and inter college level tournaments in cricket, football, basketball, khokho, chess, badminton, volleyball are regular events in the campus. The college teams in various sports have won many awards and acclaims.
         
SOCIAL WELFARE PROGRAMME : Student take part in various social activities like blood donation, pulse polio operation etc. through various student clubs and the NCC and NSS.

ACHIEVEMENTS : An educational institute is judged on the basis of its students. During the last five years we have produced 1420 well trained engineers. Our students have consistently brought laurels, some of worth mentioning are :

1. Selection of many students in top notch technical and management institutes in India and abroad for higher education.

2. Our students have more than twice stood first in GATE.

3. Our students have been selected in Civil Services Exams.
