Based upon a common desire "to build", Samir Chinai, Anish Shah and Salil Ranadive - all graduates of the School of Architecture CEPT Ahmedabad - founded Chinai Shah & Ranadive in 1989. Samir Chinai (b. 1960) has trained with Architect Luc’ Bosschem in Gent, Belgium. He is widely travelled and carries with him a palette of spatial experiences from across the globe. He has keen interests in Indian Corporate Business, and Indian Contemporary Art. Besides Ahmedabad, Salil Ranadive (b. 1963) has studied architecture at the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich and has trained with firms in Zurich and Bombay. He is currently visiting Design faculty at the Rizvi College of Architecture, is a member of the Architectural Association - London and is a vocal member of Bombay’s architectural fraternity. Anish Shah is no longer with the firm. Earlier, in 1988 as an informal design team, they were recipients of a bi-annual award for Public Place Interiors presented by the Indian Institute of Interior Designers, for the design of an Art Gallery at Kemp’s Corner, Bombay. In 1990, Salil Ranadive’s research on the Colonial Architecture of Bombay titled "An Era of Change: 1860 - 1890", was published by the Centre of Environmental Planning and Technology (Ahmedabad).
